PCTC FIRE

On the night of 25 July 2023, a fire broke out on the MV Fremantle Highway (18,549 dwt) not long after departure from her loading port. 4000 vehicles, of which a part were electric, were on board. For almost a week, the fire burned while the vessel was in the Wadden Sea, an area designated a World Heritage Site. The vessel was towed to Eemshaven (Netherlands), where, on behalf of the salvors, OOS89 attended to assist with the salvage operation.

CAR CARRIER FIRE

A combination Roll-on/Roll-off (ConRo) ship caught fire on July 5, 2023, while loading used vehicles for export at Port Newark, New Jersey. On behalf of salvors acting under their OPA'90 agreement with the vessel's owner, OOS89 attended onsite to assist in the firefighting efforts and the subsequent cargo discharge operations.

FEED BARGE RECOVERY

The salmon feed barge sank during a period of extreme weather in November 2021. OOS89 attended the project at first to deal with H2S emitted by the rotting feedstock. Plans were devised to remove the barge, and with the chartered in sheerlegs Matador 3, the barge was lifted off the seabed in record time.

LIFT BOAT SALVAGE

After a lift boat suffered a punch through on one of its legs, a lengthy salvage operation commenced. All salvage efforts, however, were in vain; the lift boat was eventually sunk on purpose to be recovered later by a different contractor. In the court case, salvage expertise was provided on behalf of the owners.

BRIDGE CONSTRUCTION

During the construction of a bridge crossing a large river, a floating working platform came adrift and capsized. Failing the initial unsuccessful salvage efforts, salvors were not compensated for their efforts. In the ensuing court case, expert advice was provided on behalf of the salvors.

TANKER EXPLOSION / FIRE

After serving as a storage tanker for many years, the MT Tanker remained anchored for an extended period. During tank cleaning operations before its demolition voyage, the vessel suffered an explosion and was engulfed in flames for some time. Remedial actions were planned following a thorough inspection of the vessel’s condition.

ENGINE ROOM REPAIRS

The main engine of this vessel was hoisted out using sheerlegs for complete disassembly. The engine room had experienced significant water ingress, submerging the main engine up to its turbocharger. The most efficient method to undertake repairs was to extract the entire engine and dismantle it at a repair facility.

CONTAINER RECOVERY

In the winter of 2019, the MSC ZOE lost a significant amount of containers just north of the Dutch islands while proceeding towards a German port. The following clean up of cargo and container debris from the islands' beaches and the seabed became a project of a magnitude never seen before. On behalf of underwriters input was provided in the execution of the operation.

CONTAINER VESSEL FIRES

Container shipping faces fire and explosion risks from incorrect cargo declarations, limited firefighting capabilities, and poor container access. Regulatory updates, like the IMDG Code for Calcium Hypochlorite, lag behind incidents. With over 30 years of expertise, OOS89 advises shipowners on fire response and safety measures.
